My journey to becoming a midwife was a long and winding path. While pregnant with my first child I took a Bradley class which drew me toward a passion for educating families and supporting them through the journey of labor. I welcomed hundreds of families into my living room over the course of nearly 2 decades (and still do); many of them honored me with an invitation onto their birth team as a doula.

These families and their struggles to find truly supportive caregivers ignited my passion for midwifery care. As I contemplated the “next steps” in my career (and finally getting all of my kids off to school!), a good friend of mine asked me what it would be like for me if didn’t attend birth any longer. Just the thought caught my breath. I couldn’t imagine not being there. It was then that I realized that despite the obstacles before me, I needed to become a midwife.

I chose Bastyr University for its reputation for academic rigor, its compassionate social justice focus and the opportunity to receive the highest level of education for direct-entry midwives in the country. I trained at two busy home and birth center practices, under more than a dozen incredibly skilled and loving CNMs, CPMs, and ND/LMs. My midwifery education was an unmatched mixture of training in the ancient art of midwifery rooted in a foundation of evidence-based practice and family-centered care. I learned from strong models of positive, collaborative working relationships with local physicians, hospitals, birth professionals, as well as alternative care providers. This is the foundation I bring to my practice.
When I’m not doing midwifery related things, you can find me enjoying my family, a good meal, and some great wine while exploring the beauty of this wonderful world we live in. [Or…more often, being a spectator at yet another sporting event with one of our four busy boys.]

In 2007 I began my journey in birth work as a DONA (Doulas of North America) certified doula. From 2007-2014 I had 4 children of my own and supported women during 80+ births as a doula. Wanting to expand my skills, I became certified through ICEA (International Childbirth Education Association) as a Childbirth Educator. I taught classes both in people’s homes and in the hospital. In 2014 I enrolled in the Midwives College of Utah where I earned my degree in Midwifery. During my time of schooling and training I attended another 70+ births as a midwifery student.

I then had a steady practice in Central Oregon before settling into Portland, Oregon as my home. I have had the opportunity to work in home, hospital, and birth center settings under the supervision of many highly experienced and respectable Certified Professional Midwives and Certified Nurse Midwives in Oregon. I graduated from the Midwives College of Utah and have earned the credential of Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) through a national organization called the National Registry of Midwives (NARM). I am also a Licensed Direct-Entry Midwife (LDM) through the state of Oregon and a Licensed Midwife (LM) in Washington.
